IP Philippines opens diwang:

Celebrating Creativity exhibition

The Intellectual

Property Office of the Philippines (IP Philippines) opens

today diwang: Celebrating Creativity, the 10th anniversary

exhibition at Alab Art Space. Diwang is a play on two Filipino

terms – diwa refers to the essence or meaning of an idea while

diwang denotes celebration.

“Diwang, the 10th

anniversary exhibition of IP Philippines, merges content and

form,” Atty. Adrian S. Cristobal, Jr., Director General of IP

Philippines, said. “Diwa represents the office’s fundamental

commitment to support the creative industries as indicated in

our vision and mission to foster creativity and

competitiveness for national development. Diwang, on the other

hand, celebrates this essence. It also celebrates the essence

of the artworks and the overall genius of the Filipino

artist,” he added.

Diwang is part of IP

Philippines’ activities to commemorate the 10th anniversary of

the Intellectual Property Code or Republic Act Number 8293,

the law that created IP Philippines.

Mideo M. Cruz,

2003 Thirteen Artists Awardee of the Cultural Center of the

Philippines (CCP) and 2006 Ateneo Art Awardee, participated in

and curated Diwang. Cruz’s works are entitled Asoge,

Superpower. The exhibition will run until August 10, 2007.

The rest of the participating visual artists and their

respective works include: Benjie Torrado Cabrera (Masquerade

of Enlightenment); Noel Soler Cuizon (Act of

Contrition); Rene de Guzman (Prusisyon/Crucifixion); Antipas

Delotavo (Dambana, Tansong Tala); Gene de Loyola (Anihan);

(Karagdagan, Pitong Ritwal); Brenda Fajardo (Apokalipsis:

Puting Kabayo, Apokalipsis: Pulang Kabayo, Apokalipsis: Itim

na Kabayo, Apokalipsis: Maputlang Kabayo); Karen Ocampo Flores

(Kagitingan), Emmanuel Garibay (Goddess); Mark Justiniani

(Epilogo); Iggy Rodriguez (Elegy for the Disenfranchised); Don

Salubayba (How the Carabao Learned English); Wire Tuazon in

collaboration with Tanke Reyes (After a Lost Original) and;

Yko Umadhay (Fragile). Earthfishfish, Butong Pakwan, and

Racquel De Loyola performed during the opening of the

exhibit.

Professor Napoleon Abueva, National Artist

for Visual Arts; Dean Virgilio S. Almario, National Artist for

Literature and; Mr. Eddie Romero, National Artist for Film,

were the guests of honor of the event.

Proceeds of

the artworks for sale will be used for art-based service

projects for children of Hands on Manila (HOM). HOM is a non-

profit organization that provides volunteer opportunities for

community service in Metro Manila. It recruits, coordinates,

and educates volunteers for other non-profit organizations.

The opening of diwang: Celebrating Creativity was made

possible through the help of Bounty Agro Ventures, Inc.

Mag:net Gallery

Dear Fellow Artists, Patrons and

Friends,

It is with deep regret and sadness that

we're announcing the closure
of Mag:net Gallery Paseo and

Mag:net Gallery ABS. These two galleries
through these

years have sustained existence with the generous support
from ORGMAC A, Inc. or Mag:net Plus making it possible for

these
venues to operate as galleries for changing

exhibitions devoted to
supporting young artists, new

energies and bold innovations. Increase
in rental fees

and other overhead expenses however and shift in our
landlord's corporate concepts have compelled us to stop

operations
after our leases end by the end of this

month.

We are especially sorry to the artists whose

exhibitions will have to
be displaced, cancelled or

postponed. Please bear with us until we can
find

alternative locations otherwise for now, Mag:net Gallery
Katipunan or The Wall at Mag:net Café High Street (owned by

ORGMAC B,
Inc or the Mag:net Café Group) are open to

accommodate the displaced
shows.

It was in

July 2002 when we first opened Mag:net Gallery in its

Quezon
City location at the Loop, ELJ Communications

Center, ABS-CBN
Compound. Mag:net Gallery Paseo in Makati

followed the year after.
Ours were not perfect art

spaces. Most of the time, we had to struggle
to maintain

the integrity of these spaces. We also had our shares of
lapses and disappointments but despite these we could claim

we had 5
good years and over a hundred significant shows

to speak of- thank
you, thank you for the continued

support and patronage.

Despite closure of our two

venues, we would like to clarify that
Mag:net Gallery as

an art institution and support system to artists
will

continue to exist and operate. We are consolidating operations

at
Mag:net Katipunan which facilities today include: a

gallery space for
changing exhibitions, a bookstore and

magazine shop that also carry
alternative music cds and

experimental/ indie dvd films, a space for
performances,

poetry readings, film screenings (Cinekatipunan) and art
talks, a gallery backroom that showcases the works of some

70 artists
we carry and a café that serves food and

beverages at student-friendly
prices. Very soon we are

putting up the Mag:net Virtual Gallery
website in

addition to the café's www.mag;net. com.ph which is now
being developed by a group of graduating students from the

Ateneo
computer department. We will also continue to

manage our alternative
art space called The Wall at the

newly opened Mag:net Café Bonifacio
High Street in the

Global City in Taguig-Makati.

We invite you

therefore to join us (no more requiem as planned
earlier)

to celebrate Mag:net Gallery's 5th Year Anniversary on 7

July
2007, Saturday at 7PM at Mag:net Katipunan. We are

coinciding this
event with the earlier-planned opening of

the three- man show of
Filipino international artists

Manuel Ocampo and Gaston Damag and
French artist, Damian

Deroubaix.

See you in Mag:net Katipunan on 7-7-07

at 7 in the evening and THANK
YOU ALL..

Creativity in Context by Lisa Ito

Exhibition Notes:

Creativity in Context
by Lisa Ito

"Creativity, it has been said, consists largely of re-

arranging what we know
in order to find out what we do

not know." --George Kneller

To celebrate

creativity—its potentials, procedures, and processes—is to
celebrate and acknowledge the potency of our histories,

traditions, and
struggles. To celebrate creativity is

also to embrace the force of change,
in whatever

manifestations and dimensions it may take, and see how this

can
spur us onwards as individuals and as a whole.

A celebration of creativity necessarily considers

context. For rarely does
creativity thrive in a

conceptual vacuum; nor does always it occur
sporadically

within self, without heed or reference to one's surrounding
history, society, and systems. Whether in affirmation or

interrogation of
one's past, present, and plans for the

future, creativity spurs the need for
change (in its

various manifestations) and freedom from immobility,
stagnation, strangulation.

The wordplay of the

exhibition's title, DIWAng, itself denotes the
liberating

potential of the power to create. The Tagalog noun from which

the
exhibition takes root diwa, when roughly translated,

generally means thought
or a state of mind. Diwa—when

attached to the correct linguistic
modifier--can also

morph into the word magdiwang or pagdiriwang (to
celebrate/celebrati on). Yet the title (as a word, 'diwang'

is almost never
used by itself, but always in reference

to another) also hints at the
incompleteness of the act—

both of thought and of celebration- -unless further
defined in relation to its contexts.

DIWAng

features the works of seventeen acclaimed Philippine visual

artists,
spanning a broad range of generations, styles,

artistic media and
standpoints. Yet more than merely

testify to the diversity and range of
talent, the

exhibition aims to gather a selection of works testifying to

a
rich tradition of highly-contextualiz ed and situated

creativity on the part
of the Filipino artist.

Seen in this perspective, several of the works in DIWAng

attest to the
potentials and needs for scientifically-

driven creativity in the field of
agricultural

productivity, such as the painting entitled Anihan

(Harvest),
by Gene de Loyola, where fields go from green

to gold in their bounty. Boy
Dominguez's works, entitled

Karagdagan and Pitong Ritwal, may be seen in the
light of

how inspiration and sources may be derived from the motifs,
traditions and knowledges of the country's national

minorities, many of
whose ways of life are threatened by

foreign and local incursions and
assaults.

In

the exhibition, works such as that of Emmanuel Garibay take

the viewer to
previously unexplored yet familiar worlds.

For instance, the work Goddess by
Garibay, repositions a

larger-than- life image of the female deity away from
her

earthy paradise and sets her in what seems to be an industrial

yet
ethereal setting, filled with geometric shapes and

shadows. Masquerade of
Enlightenment, a hand-colored

lithograph print by Benjie Torrado Cabrera,
lulls the

viewer into an exquisite realm which is later on shattered by

the
significations of the work's title.

Other

works literally remind us of how present-day imagination can

be
situated in historical realities and traditional

iconography. For instance,
Brenda Fajardo fuses both

religious references and historical symbols in the
Apocalypsis series. The series appropriates the image of the

Four Horsemen
in the Biblical Book of Revelations, said

to be allegories for Pestilence,
War, Famine, and Death,

and recasts the four dreaded figures not as
harbingers of

suffering and evil, but of hope and righteousness. For the
latter, Fajardo takes inspiration in both the historical

archetypes of
Philippine revolutionaries and struggling

women: the anti-colonial
Katipunero, the indigenous

bagani warrior, the Filipina fighter. Noel Soler
Cuizon

takes on deeply-personal issues of identity and situates these

in
history and ethnicity in the work entitled Act of

Contrition.

Other works in the exhibition focus on

the creation of metaphors for nation.
For instance, the

works Epilogo by Mark Justiniani and Sa Kagitingan, by
Karen Ocampo Flores present commentaries on the roles of

historical figures
and hero/ines on contemporary

conceptions of nationhood. Flores presents the
image of a

mother giving birth, framed by the blood of fallen heroes

and
stars who light the way. After a Lost Original, a

collaborative painting by
Wire Tuazon and Tanke Reyes,

appropriates the historical images of the
United States

of Americas' Declaration of Independence from Britain in

1776,
and juxtaposes these with images associated or

hinting at the subsequent
conquest of the Philippine

islands: monkeys, a bulol figure, effigies from
the

manunggul jar, a dog and apple. The work strongly indicts the

logic of
colonialism, pointing at how one nation's

liberation ironically ended up in
another's slavery.

DIWAng also exhibits a number of works that not only

reflect the country's
histories of colonization, but also

chart how the cultural systems and ways
of thinking

brought about by these experiences have persisted up to

now,
decades after the period of direct foreign rule. How

The Carabao Learned
English by Don Salubayba is a witty

yet nonetheless compelling critique of
the colonial

imprint left on the collective mentality of a nation. The
carabao (water buffalo), a quintessential symbol for the

ordinary Filipino,
and how it has its mind attached to

that of its master. Mideo Cruz
constructs Superpower, a

figure fashioned out of odds and ends that is also
clearly a reference to robots depicted in cartoons as

“saviors of the
universe”. Cruz delivers a jab not only

at the economic influx of imported
items (such as the

cheap plastic toys used as components of the piece), but
also the importation of mentalities and frameworks that the

foreign machine
facilitates.

Some of the other

artists featured in the exhibition have contributed works
that depict contemporary social realities in the

Philippines, attempting to
infuse new ways of seeing and

documenting realities and everyday problems.
Social

Realist stalwart Antipas Delotavo, for instance, subtly

captures the
sense of isolation, disenfranchisement and

alienation felt by many in a
country with a population of

over 75 million people in his works Dambana and
Tansong

Tala. Fragile, a diptych by Yko Umadhay, is a fitting tribute

to the
present-day phenomenon of massive labor migration,

the Overseas Foreign
Worker (OFW) boom that speaks of a

fragile economy underneath the heavy
influx of

remittances.

Creativity enables one to confront

anew the realities that one often
ignores—or wishes to

ignore. The pervasive issue of record-breaking poverty
levels and the rising economic disparities between the elite

and the
downtrodden is eloquently alluded to in the work

Elegy for the
Disenfranchised, by Iggy Rodriguez. The

steel structures signifying supposed
development and

progress are portrayed by Rodriguez as a skeletal frame, a
signifier of death to the downtrodden and dispossesed.

Meanwhile, the issue
of extrajudicial killings of

civilians and activists is alluded to and
articulated in

works such as Prusisyon/Crucifixi on by Rene de Guzman and

the
Left Over Project Series by Racquel de Loyola. De

Guzman's dismembered clay
heads and De Loyola's soft

sculptures hanging from the ceiling take on a
chilling

signification when arranged in this particular manner,

resonating
in their images the countless victims of

extrajudicial killings, abductions,
and human rights

violations of late.

As a whole, the works in DIWAng

are generally rooted in realities,
histories, and social

truths—far by among the best sources of material for
the

creative mind.

PROGRAM

June 25

(Monday)
Cuban Film Program
Bernie Dwyer and Roberto

Ruiz Rebo: MISSION AGAINST
TERROR
To be presented by

the Philippine-Cuban Friendship
Association (Amistad-

Philippine s)

Mission Against Terror
48 mins

Documentary

Five Cuban men are in prison for being

anti-terrorists
in the country that declared war against

terror.

Cuba has every right to protect its country

and people
from ultra-right groups in Miami that have

killed
scores in their island right under the US

government’s
nose. So were known terrorists at large in

Miami
monitored by Cuban patriots, who also passed
information to US authorities. Could there have been a
mix up? Instead of the terrorists, the anti-terrorists
were abducted and locked up.

The Cuban Five

(Gerardo Hernández, Ramón Labañino,
Fernando González,

René González and Antonio Guerrero)
were illegally held

in US jails since 1998 and denied
family visits and bail

after almost two years of being
in solitary confinement.

Lawyer Leonard Weinglass
calls this case a political one,

and a “violation”
from the start.

“Mission

Against Terror” maps Cuba ’s 48-year struggle
against

terrorism and the clamor for the freedom of
Cuban 5. Its

use of historic footage and interviews
with experts and

families of the accused make moving
portraits of the

Cuban patriots and elusive justice in
the US .

Bernie Dwyer and Roberto Ruiz collaborated on this
critically acclaimed Irish-Cuban documentary that
debuted at Havana ’s 26th Festival of New Latin
American Cinema in December 2004.

Following the

film, former political prisoner and
member of the FREE

THE CUBAN FIVE Committee of Amistad
(Philippines- Cuba

Friendship Association) Donato
Continente will present on

the issue and inform on how
individuals can become

involved. Cuban Ambassador
H.E.Jorge Rey Jimenez is also

invited to give his
remarks.

June 26

(Tuesday)
Sinekalikasan Program

This third

screening of environmental films will
feature two works

on the state of the Pasig River by
students of the

University of the Philippines College
of Mass

Communications (UP CMC) and a
video-documentary on the

people's right to water by
socio-economic think tank IBON

Foundation.

on the effects of toxic heavy
metals on the health of the

community and the
environment along Pasig river. [Likang

Tabing-Ilog (Riverside)
(2007 11 mins)
A student documentary feature on the

everyday lives of
the communities and workers along the

Pasig River as
they strive to live a normal life despite

the degree
of waste dumping and pollution in the area.

[Elephant
Child Productions]

Tubig: Buhay o

Tubo? (Water: Life or Profit?)
(2006Digital video14

mins)
The right to water is the right to life. Water

should
be used for meeting people's needs—for their
livelihood and for their daily use. But government
denies farmers and fisherfolk of water for livelihood
in favor of the interests of big private and foreign
investors' use of the nation's water resources.

We hope to see you at

the Congress! Thank you very much in advance.

CINEMALAYA FILM CONGRESS 2007
24-25 July 2007 * CCP

Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino

Theme : HARNESSING

TECHNOLOGY FOR ARTISTIC EXPRESSION

Rationale :

Since 2001, the relatively inexpensive
technology of

digital video filmmaking has inspired and enabled a
new

generation of film artists to create films imbued with a

robust
spirit of independence and originality.

Fortunately, the rise of a
new group of enlightened film

producers as well as the establishment
of competitions

and festivals for the independent film, such as
those of

Cinemalaya, Cinema One and Cine Manila, have served to
further bolster and promote the achievements of an exciting

breed of
young filmmakers.

But much work

remains to be done. For one,
the masterful handling of

the new DV technology is a goal that many
filmmakers

continue to work for. For another, the rapid development
of technology related to filmmaking demands vigilance and

unflagging
attention from filmmakers, who need to be

continuously updated about
the latest technology and to

learn how to use such technology.

In response to

these needs, the Cinemalaya
Congress 2007 intends to

focus on the intimate and inextricable
relations between

technology and art in filmmaking. Five panels
composed of

film artists, technicians and businessmen will
illustrate, articulate and elaborate on these relations and

show how
technology can indeed be harnessed for artistic

expression in the
cinema.

Objectives: The

Cinemalaya Congress 2007 has set the following
objectives

for its two-day conference:

1. To evaluate the

achievements of selected Cinemalaya 2005 and
2006 films,

especially from the point of view of how they have
succeeded in using DV technology for artistic expression;

2. To inform filmmakers about the most recent and

most
significant developments in film technology, which

can widen or
strengthen or refine their ability to

express themselves as film
artists; and

3. To

formulate alternative distribution systems for a long-
term marketing and distribution of independent films both

here and
abroad.

Eiga Sai 2007

CONTEMPORARY FILMS
THE JAPAN

FOUNDATION, MANILA’S
MONTH-LONG EIGA SAI

Eiga

Sai 2007
(SCREENING SCHEDULE)

The Japan

Foundation, Manila, in cooperation with the Shangri-La Plaza

Mall, the Cultural Center of the Philippines, and the UP Film

Institute, proudly presents slices of Japanese life as seen

through the eyes of contemporary Japanese directors of “Eiga

Sai 2007”: a showcase of modern film genre at the Shang

Cineplex, UP Film Institute and CCP Dream Theater.

Among the films to be featured in Eiga Sai 2007 are Kamikaze

Girls (Shimotsuma Monogatari, 2004, directed by Tetsuya

Nakashima), Harmful Insect (Gaichu, 2002, directed by Akihiko

Shiota), Hotel Hibiscus (Hotel Hibiscus, 2002, directed by

Yuji Nakae), No One’s Ark (Baka no Hakobune, 2002, directed by

Nobuhiro Yamashita), Inochi (Inochi, 2002, directed by Tetsuo

Shinohara), Out of this World (Kono Yo no Sotoe-Club Shinchu

Gun, 2003, directed by Junji Sakamoto), The Stars Converge

(Chirusoku no Natsu, 2003, directed by Kiyoshi Sasabe), Blue

(Blue, 2001, directed by Hiroshi Ando), Blue Spring (Aoi Haru,

2001, directed by Toshiaki Toyoda) and Shangri-la (Togenkyo No

Hitobito, 2002, directed by Takashi Miike).

The

Eiga Sai (literally, ‘film festival’ in Japanese) opens at the

Shangri-la Plaza Mall on June 20 with light comedy, “Kamikaze

Girls” (2004, 103 minutes, Color), written by Novala Takemoto

and directed by Nakashima Tetsuya. It tells the story of two

very different teenagers who become best friends, even though

neither will admit it. J-Pop star Kyoko Fukada stars as

Momoko, a 17-year-old girl so obsessed with everything rococo

that she wears old-fashioned frilly white clothing and carries

a parasol. After Momoko’s mother leaves her small time crook

husband, her young daughter grows up on the farm, 60 miles

from Tokyo, with her ex Yakuza father who sells fake Versace

merchandize and grandmother, a woman with an extraordinary

ability to catch flies in mid air. Desperate for money, Momoko

starts selling the remainder of her father's counterfeit

clothing, but her only customer is a tough-talking young biker

chick, Ichigo (Anna Tsuchiya), who belongs to an all-girl

gang. Their lives exemplify some of the fascinating

intricacies of Japanese youth culture in a feel good film with

art direction creatively designed to blow your socks off. The

movie garnered critical acclaim and won numerous awards in

Japan and abroad.

All films in Eiga Sai 2007 will

be shown with English subtitles. Screening venues of Eiga Sai

2007 are at the Cinema 3, Shangri-La Plaza Mall (June 20-26),

UP Film Institute (July 2-5), and CCP Dream Theater (July 4-

8). Admission is free.

For detailed screening

schedules and inquiries on Eiga Sai 2007, please check the

Japan Foundation, Manila website: www.jfmo.org.ph or call the

JFM telephone numbers 811-6155 to 58.

the

Awards last year, while Valdezco was previously
short-

listed in 2005.

The short-list was selected by the

2007 Ateneo Art
Awards Jury after going through over one

hundred
nominations. Each artist, a Filipino citizen, 35

years

or
group exhibition in any public venue held between 2
May 2006 and 1 May 2007.

From the short-list, the

jury deliberated on 20 June
2007 to determine the three

recipients of the Awards.
The winners will then be

announced on 8 August 2007 at

Rockwell Tent following "2007
Ateneo Art Awards:

Global/Vernacular, " an exhibition
of the works of the

short-listed artists at Power
Plant Mall from 2 - 7

August 2007.

Global/Vernacular is recognition and

credence,
acknowledging Philippine art has its own

nuances yet
believing it moves beyond local context to

reverberate
cross-culturally. It also calls attention to

the
expansion of the Ateneo Art Gallery Studio

Residency
Grant, the only program of its kind organized

by a
Philippine cultural institution. 2007 marks the

third
year of the Ateneo Art Gallery Studio Residency

Grant
in Australia, to

be held for the first time in La
Trobe University in

Bendigo, as well as the
introduction of the Ateneo Art

Gallery Studio
Residency Grant in Singapore with Artesan Gallery.
Each residency provides one of the three Ateneo Art
Awardees with roundtrip airfare, accommodation and a
work studio for three weeks, an allowance, as well as
an invitation to exhibit at their respective host
venues.

WCOPA National Director for the Philippines introduces 2007

Team Philippines

For any queries, you may contact

Oliver Oliveros, Senior Public Relations Officer/Consultant,

at tel. no. 818-1111 loc. 225, mobile no. 0928-7725254, email

add. stages_pr@i-manila.com.ph, or web site

http://oliverpublicist.blogspot.com

WCOPA National

Director for the Philippines introduces 2007 Team

Philippines

Carlo Orosa, newly-licensed World

Championships of Performing Arts (WCOPA) National Director for

the Philippines, presented to sponsors and the media this

year’s Team Philippines that will compete at the 11th Annual

WCOPA in Hollywood, California during a fundraising concert

held recently at Teatrino, Promenade, Greenhills.

Ida Henares, former WCOPA National Director for the

Philippines and Jed Madela, 2005 WCOPA Grand Champion

Performer of the World, were at the affair to show support to

2007 Team Philippines.

Team Philippines includes

Pop Virtuoso Reuben Laurente, Hamilton Canada Talent Hunt

Grand Prize Winner and “Philippine Idol” finalist Reymond

Sajor, “Born Diva” Grand Prize Winner Raki Vega, 2006 Manhunt

International semi-finalist Iago Raterta, “Little Big

Superstar” finalist Aria Clemente and Zamboanga-based

Revelation Band.

WCOPA is often cited as the one

and only “official Talent Olympics” for performers and

entertainers. After 11 years of incredible growth, it is the

only premier international talent and modeling competition of

its kind annually held in Hollywood, the entertainment capital

of the world! Similar to the Olympics, only invited and

qualified competitors (called Worldstars) representing

countries compete each year in a fierce competition for the

“Grand Champion Performer of the World” titles.

There are three rounds of competitions. The first will

determine the medalists: Gold, silver, and bronze. The

medalists move on to the second round of competitions to

determine overall World Champions. Outstanding and

entertaining performers chosen during the second round will

then perform before a selected panel of judges to determine

the finalists who will compete for the “Grand Champion of the

World” category titles and ultimately the “Grand Champion

Performer of the World” titles.

Competitors are

encouraged to look for sponsors from their respective

countries that will pay up for their registration fee,

airfare, food and accommodation at WCOPA from July 28 to Aug

5. Expected expenditure would sum up to around $3,000 per

delegate. Over 50 countries are expected to send in their

representatives to WCOPA.

“Team Philippines this

year is carefully selected and made up of incredible talents

from major TV networks and nationwide singing competitions. We

are also sending our very first male model delegate to WCOPA,”

says Orosa.

Griff O’ Neal, former “Miss Universe”

pageant executive and WCOPA president, shares the same

excitement over Team Philippines. “All of us are anxious to

welcome Team Philippines to the 11th annual WCOPA! "Go for

the Gold!” says O’ Neal.

For inquiries and

donations to 2007 WCOPA Team Philippines, you may contact

Oliver Oliveros of STAGES at mobile no. 0928-7725254 or e-mail

add. stages_pr@i-manila.com.ph.

2007 WCOPA Team

Philippines has been getting support from the following

sponsors: PLDT MyDSL, Outland, STAGES, Christian Bautista,

Senator Ramon Bong Revilla, Jr., Mr. Kenway, Trumpets

Musicademy, Rodriguez de Alba Bespoke and Fotofabrik –

A Tribute to Frida Kahlo @ Instituto Cervantes

A TRIBUTE TO FRIDA KAHLO at INSTITUTO CERVANTES

On July 6, 2007, one hundred years after the birth of

prominent Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, Instituto Cervantes

will commemorate her artistic legacy by inviting female

Filipino artists from various fields to pay homage to the

immortal artist. Writers Jessica Zafra and Marjorie Evasco,

sculptress July Lluch, filmmaker Ellen Ramos, visual artists

Steph Palallos and Wawi Navarroza, and dancer Myra Beltran

will take part in Queremos tanto a Frida, Mahal namin si

Frida, a series of cultural events covering the month of July.

All activities will be held at the Instituto Cervantes

premises.

Frida Kahlo, an artist and

feminist icon, is well-known for her self-portraits which

depicted her emotional pain and physical suffering through

symbolism. In the last decades, she has gained the respect

of the artistic world and even become a popular figure for the

public, resulting in several movies about her life. One of

the best films about her is Frida, naturaleza viva, which was

directed by Paul Ledouc in 1984. This film will be shown at

Instituto Cervantes on July 6 at 6 pm.

Later in the day, Jessica Zafra will be reading her article

"Contra Frida Kahlo" to the public. Her article is a

criticism against the media's portrayal of Frida Kahlo. On

the same day July Lluch will present her Bust of Frida. There

will also be a photo exhibit by Wawi Navarroza entitled

"Abducted", which will feature her photographs influenced by

the figure and work of Frida Kahlo. Another interesting

display will be the wire sculpture by Steph Palallos, which is

based on Kahlo's self-portrait, "The Two Fridas" (1939). This

self-portrait depicts the fragmented side of her personality,

the traditional Mexican that Diego adored, and the more modern

"European Woman."

On July 14 Marjorie

Evasco and Nityalila Saulo will be presenting a joint-

performance inspired by the great artist.

One week later, on July 21, Ellen Ramos will be presenting a

film inspired by Frida's most surreal work, "What the Water

Gave Me". In this video, the water literally becomes a

reflective surface where the real and imagined merge.

On July 28, the Frida Kahlo month will come to a

close with Myra Beltran premiering her piece "Frida before the

Mirror." Beltran will be juxtaposed against images of Frida

Kahlo's paintings. As the dancer writes her emotion with her

body's movements, constricted due to Frida's physical

disabilities, she also writes her body into canvas, just like

Frida's inscription of her body in her work. This symbolizes

her liberation as an artist and a woman.

To complete the tribute to Frida Kahlo, the Embassy of Mexico

and Instituto Cervantes will present Mexican Cinema in the

times of Frida Kahlo, a film cycle of films produced during

the last decade of Frida Kahlos's life. The cycle comprises

four films directed by the movie industry giants Emilio

Fernandez and Luis Buñuel: Maria Candelaria (1944), Victimas

del pecado (1950), the classic Los Olvidados (1950) and A

Woman Without Love (1951). This cycle is genuine proof that

Mexican cinema had a prestigious past way before the rise of

directors like Gonzalez Iñárritu ( Amores perros, Babel),

Cuarón(Y tu mama tambien) and Guillermo del Toro (El laberinto

del fauno).

The centenary of Frida Kahlo's

birth will be celebrated not only in the Philippines but also

worldwide. In her native country, Kahlo will be honoured

with the largest-ever exhibit of her paintings at the Museum

of the Fine Arts palace, which will be Kahlo's first

comprehensive exhibit in Mexico. Works will be on loan from

Detroit, Miami, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Nayoga, Japan.

The exhibit will include one-third of her artistic

production, as well as manuscripts and letters that have not

been previously displayed.

Mahal namin si

Frida is organized by Instituto Cervantes, with the

collaboration of the Spanish Embassy, AECI, and the Embassy of

Mexico.

Nexus: Pursuing an Elusive Conjunction

NEXUS:
pursuing an elusive conjunction

Jose Tence Ruiz,

curator

There is often, if not always the elusive

conjunction between the act of
proposing form and

articulating lived circumstance. Art practice is
egregiously insistent on privileging crafty strategy over

observed
substance. Artists are begrudged their penchant

for the didactic, for the
sympathetic, for the involved

issue and risk indifference whenever they
venture into

alignments with the timely in lieu of cultivating

spectacular
and entertaining formalist gymnastics. Such

is the climate into which TuTOK:
NEXUS insists on

insinuating its recent batch of site-specific
installations.

TuTOK as an informal collective of

young and mid-career visual practitioners seeks to confront an

inclination towards décor as against reflective visual
reckoning. NEXUS, its 7th venture since 2006 finds an

appropriate venue –
the lobby of the Loyola House of

Studies of the Ateneo de Manila
University,an institution

devoted to contemplation, philosophical and
theological

formation, itself a nexus on many levels, architecturally

and
conceptually. 5 projects offer provocations against a

complacent view of
artmaking.

Buen Calubayan’s

h a p a g h (x) reconstructs a merging of the Last Supper
and a derelict convention. Is the repast that signals the

entry into
apostolate a congress with the

underprivileged? Does his playroom tile floor
chide us

for our naivete that apostolate is dissipation or does he

remind us
that innocence must underpin any struggle for

upliftment?

Mideo Cruz has several segments to his

project, the most prominent of which
is Anghel de la

Guardia, a 9 and a half foot ethereal figure that is part
angel, part icon and part doorkeep to a hallucinatory yet

gated wonderland.
He seems to ask: Is Disneyland the

virtual surrogate for Paradise Fading? He
converts an in

-house phone station into a dense collage of connectivity

with
the complex political landscape with its deities,

lords and coerced
idolatries in Politeismo 3. And his

nearly cute but also subversive viriña
named Altar nudges

us pixie like not to forget how the nexus between
materialism and proof of faith might, on occasion, reify

into conceit and
fetish.

Lyra Garcellano

offers accessories to the Lobby sofa sets and very aptly
labels her effort as Prime Time. Is not our window to the

modern world
viewed with our posteriors attached so

comfortably to sofa sets such as
these, our visions and

vistas drenched beyond numbness with mediated
violence

delivered at clockwork regularity and esthetic efficacy at

such
prime hours? With at a large part of modern

programming laced with mayhem,
might we not actually

mistake telecommunicated tragedy for pathetic
embellishment?

UGATLahi collective’s White Lies

offers a mattress of beaten scarecrow
workclothes,

pillaged, crushed and shaped into a troubled dreamscape

often
enough lain upon by those very ones who have sucked

the dreams away from the
disenfranchised. Pseudo-baroque

headboards and embroidered satin slipcovers
contrast

disconcertingly with faded dungarees, disembodied limbs and

flaccid
scarecrow heads. The bed stands on a section of

dried river clay, a micro
landscape chronicling a wide

social sector’s pained and sun-bleached
dissipation

amidst the profligate privilege of an entrenched and narrow
minority.

Jose Tence Ruiz and Danilo Ilag-Ilag

once again collaborate on their largest
version of a

kariton/kathedral poised on the Sisyphean incline, ever

aware
of the unavoidable imperative of struggling against

gravity, described by
astronomers as the single most

pervasive force of our measured universe. Is
gravity the

defining condition of existence?

Is the decision to

push against its natural weight the key to any salvific
transcendence. Paraisado: Rampa is bathed in yellow and

black/bitumen,
reminiscent of warnings and schoolbuses,

which education and religion
partake of. As does the

Loyola House of Studies.

Thus a circle, maybe even

a cycle, is drawn between the site and its
transient

occupants, between the LHS lobby and the projects that make

up
NEXUS. With Sisyphean determination to push upwards

and forward, TuTOK
through NEXUS pursues that elusive

conjunction between art and religion,
between matter and

spirit, between the tangible and the ethereal, between
evocative propositions and a call to reflection and

action.

TuTOK: NEXUS
An Exhibition of New Site

Specific Installations
exploring the confluence, the

intersections,
the nexus between and betwixt politics and

art,
between idealism and stark reality,
between

philosophy and pragmatic survivalism,
between the mundane

and the transcendent,
between the violent and the

sublime,
between the commercial and the heroic,
between the corporeal and the ethereal,
between heaven

and earth
